This is White Phosphorus being used on civilians in Gaza in the 2008 Israeli offensive against the Gazan population.
White Phosphorus:

Amnesty International delegates currently in Gaza have found indisputable evidence of the widespread use of white phosphorus in densely populated residential areas in Gaza City and in the north.
Christopher Cobb-Smith, a weapons expert who is in Gaza as part of a four-person Amnesty International fact-finding team, said:
“Yesterday, we saw streets and alleyways littered with evidence of the use of white phosphorus, including still burning wedges and the remnants of the shells and canisters fired by the Israeli army.
“White phosphorus is a weapon intended to provide a smokescreen for troop movements on the battlefield. It is highly incendiary, air burst and its spread effect is such that it that should never be used on civilian areas.’
Amnesty International Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories researcher Donatella Rovera said:
‘Such extensive use of this weapon in Gaza’s densely populated residential neighbourhoods is inherently indiscriminate. Its repeated use in this manner, despite evidence of its indiscriminate effects and its toll on civilians, is a war crime.’
White phosphorus wedges are scattered all around residential buildings and many were still burning on Sunday, further endangering the residents and their property; streets and alleys are full of children playing, drawn to the detritus of war and often unaware of the danger.
Christopher Cobb-Smith added:
“Artillery is an area weapon; not good for pinpoint targeting. The fact that these munitions, which are usually used as ground burst, were fired as air bursts increases the likely size of the danger area.’
Each 155mm artillery shell bursts, deploying 116 wedges impregnated with white phosphorus that ignite on contact with oxygen and can scatter, depending on the height at which it is burst (and wind conditions), over an area at least the size of a football pitch. In addition to the indiscriminate effect of air-bursting such a weapon, firing such shells as artillery exacerbates the likelihood that civilians will be affected.
Amnesty delegates found both burning white phosphorous wedges and their carrier shells (which delivered them) in and around houses and buildings. Some of these heavy steel shells have caused extensive damage to residential properties.
Among the places worst affected by the use of white phosphorus was the UNRWA compound in Gaza City, where Israeli forces fired three white phosphorus shells on 15 January. The white phosphorus landed next to some fuel trucks and caused a large fire that destroyed tons of humanitarian aid. Prior to this strike the compound had already been hit an hour earlier and the Israeli authorities had been informed by UNRWA officials and had given assurance that no further strikes would be launched on the compound.
In another incident on the same day a white phosphorus shell landed in the al-Quds hospital in Gaza City also causing a fire that forced hospital staff to evacuate the patients.
White phosphorus landing on skin can burn deep through muscle and into the bone, continuing to burn unless deprived of oxygen.

Considering that Israel admitted back in 2009 that it used white phosphorous during the 2008 conflict in Gaza, why is this Amnesty International story such a big deal now?
Are they trying to stir up anti-Israeli sentiment ahead of the September UN Palestinian vote or are they just so incompetent that they only just now came to the conclusion that WP was used over three years ago?
Either way, this is old news.

Sixteen ‘civilians’ dead in Nato hit on Libya…or Taking care of those civilians—-one bomb at a time

Sixteen “civilians” have been killed in a Nato air strike on Brega, to the east of the Libyan capital, state TV on Friday quoted a military source as saying.

Both Al-Libya and Al-Jamahiriya channels carried the report, which could not be independently verified.

Al-Libya said that in addition to those killed, there were “dozens of wounded” from the strike “last night.”

An international coalition began carrying out strikes on forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Qadhafi on March 19. Nato took command of operations over Libya on March 31.

Wow. Remember when the media used to count the body totals in Iraq and Afghanistan on an almost daily basis? When anti-war protesters marched through the street and their every breath was recorded by the news? Hell, there were times when the media even made up ‘news’ stories about slaughters taking place in Iraq.

But now….are those crickets?

Amazing.  Guess that’s what happens when the media forgets it’s place and throws all it’s weight behind a candidate, and later president, then refuses to do their jobs out of fear of making their messiah look bad.

US ‘deeply concerned’ by violence in Ivory Coast….or Only a thousand were massacred? That’s a shame. NEXT!!

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the U.S. is “deeply concerned” about the situation in the Ivory Coast and reports of human rights abuses and a massacre of more than 1,000 people.

In a statement Sunday, Clinton called on Laurent Gbagbo (luh-RAHN’ BAHG’-boh), the entrenched incumbent who lost a November vote, to step down immediately. She also says forces loyal to the internationally recognized President Alassane Ouattara (AL’-ah-sahn wah-TAHR’-ah) must respect the rules of war and stop attacks on civilians.

The alleged mass killings occurred in an area controlled by forces loyal to Ouattara. She also says UN peacekeepers must aggressively enforce their mandate to protect the people of the African nation.

No bombings yet?  I guess that White House official wasn’t just talking out his keister when he said the White House doesn’t make decisions on war based on “consistency and precedent”.

More Than 800 Civilians Killed in Ivory Coast…or Oh Goodie! More Humanitarian Issues! When’s The Bombing Begin?

More than 800 civilians have been killed in a western Ivory Coast town where hundreds of U.N. peacekeepers are based, the International Federation of the Red Cross said Saturday, but the U.N. military spokesman said he had no information about mass killings there.

The Roman Catholic charity Caritas put the toll at more than 1,000 dead, an estimate reached by its workers who visited the town of Duekoue on Wednesday.
