The Obama campaign jumps the shark; Sesame Street demands Obama’s “Big Bird” ad be taken down

This is it.  The Obama campaign has run out of ideas. They have jumped the shark.

While Mitt Romney has been spending the last few days focused on foreign policy, President Obama has spent his time talking about something a bit less…well…Presidential:  Big Bird.

Here’s the new “Big Bird” ad released by the Obama campaign:

The ad, while humorous to be sure, comes off like a Saturday Night Live sketch and not something a Presidential campaign should be talking about.  However, it doesn’t end with just this one ad.

In Obama’s events since the debate last Wednesday, he has mentioned Sesame Street characters at least 11 times.  Meanwhile, he has mentioned the crisis in Libya not once.

Politico noted the irony of the Obama campaign’s pettiness today:

And the president, as others have noted, and his team have been going fairly small at a moment when Romney is consistent in a message and pivoting toward going bigger (the foreign policy speech, more emotion on the trail, and so forth). And this video is the kind of small ball that Boston smacked over for months.

The entire issue is silly on its face, Sesame Street is a merchandizing juggernaut that hardly needs any taxpayer subsidies.

To make matters worse, Sesame Street isn’t very happy about being used as a political bludgeon.  The Sesame Workshop issued this press release today demanding that the Obama campaign take down his ad featuring:

Sesame Workshop is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization and we do not endorse candidates or participate in political campaigns. We have approved no campaign ads, and as is our general practice, have requested that the ad be taken down.

Sesame Street’s producers showed great class and ettiquette by ordering the ad removed. I’d hate my material being used...

Obama is a showman not a President. I lost respect for him after what happened to the ambassador on 9-11. He cares more...
